Three Steps to Choosing Your Perfect Rug

Article Posted On: March 7, 2024

Need a rug? Don’t know where to start? We’re here to help.

A carefully-chosen, well-placed rug can take any space to the next level. So, how do you find that perfect rug? Follow three simple steps from our experts and you’ll be on your way to rug nirvana in no time.

Step one: Choose your material

When it comes to rug materials, there are essentially two categories: Natural fibers like wool, sisal, and grass, vs. synthetic fibers. There are benefits to both and at The Perfect Rug, we offer a wide variety of options to suit all needs, styles, and settings. But what and how should you choose? Here’s the 411.

Natural fibers

Wool

A wildly popular rug material and for good reason. Wool rugs offer the ideal combo of durability and comfort, and can be a lasting investment for you and your family. Naturally stain and spill resistant, wool rugs will treat you well if you take good care of them. Our experts recommend wool for the spaces in your home where comfort matters, like bedrooms and living rooms. Avoid placing these rugs in direct sunlight as they can fade over time and absorb water if it’s particularly hot and humid.

Sisal

Extremely durable, sisal rugs are ideal if you prefer a casual yet elegant look. At The Perfect Rug, we carry sisal rugs in a multitude of earthy, neutral colors. These rugs are popular as kitchen runners, hallways, living rooms, dining rooms, and other high-traffic areas of your home.

Grass

From mountain grass to seagrass to jute, grass rugs are uniquely textured, bringing a natural, outdoorsy charm indoors. Dense and sturdy, they are often sustainably made and environmentally friendly, crafted without chemicals or additives.

Synthetic fibers

Rugs composed of synthetic materials are often more affordable and available in a greater range of colors and patterns than their natural counterparts. They stand up to heavy traffic and can even be pre-treated to repel stains. Before purchase, we suggest requesting a swatch sample (especially if you’re shopping online). We want to make sure you really love the look and feel, and more importantly, if chemicals are an issue in your space, a natural fiber rug might be a better choice.

Step two: Select your size

Wondering how to choose the size and shape of your rug? Start by taking some measurements to determine how much floor space you have. Next, consider furniture and other factors that might impact size and shape. Get some inspiration by browsing our selection of standard rugs — in sizes that would fit the room, like 6x9 feet, 9x12 feet, and beyond.

Step three: Standard or Custom?

Up to you. If affordability is a factor, and it fits, one of our standard quick-ship rugs is your best bet. The only catch is that standard rugs aren’t customizable. Want that just-right fit? Need an atypical size or shape? Looking to create cohesion and pull in some of the colors to compliment your space? Go custom. We’d love to help you design the perfect rug to elevate your space and tie your room together.
